Top 5 Web Building Tips
Starting a website can seem like a daunting task. You want your site to appear professional and be successful, meaning that you have to draw in traffic and keep people on your page once they land there. You can scour the internet for web building tips, but in the end, these are the only ones that matter.
1. Target keywords in your content, titles, headings and file names. Targetting key words is how you get listed in the search engines and get your page ranking up. This does not mean that you flood your page with keywords and phrases just to bring in traffic. Your site should be informative and offer information or products that are related to the keywords you are targetting. Otherwise, people will leave your site once they find it and your site will not be successful regardless of following other web building tips.
2. Make sure your site is easy to navigate. All pages should link to your home page at the least, and it is helpful if every page links to every other page. You should also make sure your content and pages are well organized and that the natural progression through your site makes sense. Cover only one topic per page to please both readers and search engines. Your website tools should also be easy to navigate and use, such as your guestbook or shopping cart. If your site is not easy to navigate and use then people will not bother and they will go somewhere else.
3. Don't over abuse color schemes and fonts. The harder your site is to read and the harder it is on the eyes, the fewer people will actually stick around to read your site or buy anything from you.
4. Use a web builder rather than risk getting the code wrong. If you are not highly familiar with HTML code, CSS, flash and Java, you have no business building a site from scratch. Even though there are a million sites out there that offer free tutorials and cheat sheets for learning these languages, you are better off working with a website builder that uses templates. You do not want to have a poorly designed site just because you wanted to do it from scratch and make it unique.
5. Plan ahead. Do not try to go into a website builder and start creating a website immediately, with little thought or planning. You need to plan everything in advance, including how many pages will be on your site, what those pages will hold, and what graphics you will use. All of your content and graphics should be created or chosen before you actually start building your site. This will make your site much better than if you try to plan while you create.
